I've heard this is actually a GP18, can anyone substantiate this?

Tom Beckett General It's impossible to tell from this angle, since the units are essentially indistinguishable. The easy spotting difference is the radiator grille, at the rear of the long hood. On a GP 9, it looks like chicken wire; on a GP 18, it's a grid. If you have a copy, check The Second Diesel Spotters Guide, page EMD 58, which illustrates the difference.
